I’ve been thinking of myself as an adult since I left school for polytech at 16 and moved out of home at 17. The reason I left school at 16 was because I was sick of not being treated like an adult.
I have no doubt that my worldliness was mostly imagined at that age, but I was still doing a fine job of looking after myself.
Ten years later I don’t feel or act like the adult Dr Jose describes but I am an adult if for no other reason than that is what the law decrees me to be. No one is responsible for my actions but me.
Which means I’ll eat cake for breakfast if I damn well want to.
There are a lot of questionable things in this article about (some) (Australian) 21-year-olds not considering themselves to be “adults”, but the bit that really grated for me was this quote from Dr Paul Jose of VUW’s School of Psychology:
